Isabel Miramontes Spanish, b. 1962
"From figuration to abstraction...
Reaching symbolism and poetry,
expressing a very depth of humain being and the essence of life..."
Her figurative yet abstract sculptures explore the human body through absence, void and fragmentation, creating powerful works that resonate with collectors, architects and interior or landscape designers. Art Thema Gallery has proudly represented Isabel Miramontes for over 20 years, and her sculptures are widely collected and integrated into private, corporate and hospitality spaces worldwide.
Isabel Miramontes is an internationally recognized Spanish sculptor whose work explores the human figure at the threshold between figuration and abstraction. Working primarily in bronze, she has developed a singular sculptural language in which absence, void and fragmentation become as expressive as matter itself.
Her sculptures depict human bodies reduced to their essential lines—elongated, fragmented, sometimes seemingly eroded by time. Faces are often only suggested, bodies appear cut into vertical strips, allowing light and space to pass through them. This deliberate use of emptiness is not a lack, but a structural and symbolic element, inviting the viewer to project emotion, memory and introspection into the work.
For Isabel Miramontes, sculpture is not conceived as a solid mass to be shaped, but as a void to which the artist gives a surface. Bronze, with its warmth and subtle patinas, becomes the ideal medium to express this tension between presence and disappearance. Her figures embody the ambiguity of the human condition: strength and fragility, confinement and freedom, intimacy and universality.
Her work often evokes a feeling similar to that experienced when looking at an old photograph: the subject may belong to the past, yet its vitality remains strikingly present. Chairs, benches, architectural curves or fragmented limbs suggest the trace of a body—an invisible presence that continues to inhabit space. Sculpture becomes a place of passage, a silent witness to human existence.
Isabel Miramontes’ sculptures resonate deeply with private collectors, architects and interior or landscape designers seeking works with strong emotional depth and refined formal balance. Her pieces integrate naturally into contemporary interiors, gardens, corporate spaces and hospitality projects, where they create moments of contemplation and quiet intensity.
Her works are part of prestigious international collections, including:
-
“Waiting For” – Ritz-Carlton, Dubai
-
“Origin” – Four Seasons, Mauritius
-
“Intimidad” – The Murray, Hong Kong
Her sculptures are also held by renowned private collectors worldwide.
Born in 1962 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Isabel Miramontes grew up and studied in Belgium. She obtained a teaching diploma in Fine Arts at the Institut Sainte-Marie in Brussels, before continuing her training at the Academy of Fine Arts of Saint-Gilles, where she developed a rigorous practice of drawing from live models. Her artistic reflection was further enriched through the teachings of art historian Gastón Fernandez, whose influence encouraged a demanding yet open and generous approach to creation.
Isabel Miramontes discovered sculpture in 1994, an encounter that became a turning point and the central axis of her artistic life. Since then, she has devoted herself entirely to sculpture, exhibiting extensively across Europe, the United States and Asia.
Art Thema Gallery has been the gallery permanently presenting Isabel Miramontes’ work in Belgium for over 20 years, and continues to accompany the latest developments of her sculptural practice through exhibitions, fairs and private presentations.
