Daufin is one of the rare true French expressionists, with a personal touch inherited from Cubism. Working largely with the palette knife, he builds landscapes, villages and harbours from interlocking planes of vivid colour, like a harmonious puzzle that creates depth and relief.
He combines Cézanne's sense of structure with a Van Gogh-like intensity of colour, but without the anger of German expressionism: his canvases convey energy, resilience and quiet warmth. His blue paintings are especially refined, built on a deliberately restrained range of blues, turquoise and discreet greens.
Although figures rarely appear, human presence is felt everywhere, giving his work a deep sense of community.

Born on 24 May 1930 in Saint-Lô, Normandy, Jacques Daufin entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Oran, Algeria, in 1947. He moved to Paris in 1948.
From 1955, he divided his life between Paris, Oran and the Algerian desert, whose light left a lasting mark on his palette. During those years he designed the sets for the Oran theatre and painted frescoes for the city's cathedral.
In 1960, he settled in Hérouville, in the Vexin, close to Auvers-sur-Oise. The landscapes of the Oise and the surrounding villages became one of his great subjects.
He exhibited at the major Paris salons (Salon de la Jeune Peinture, Salon des Indépendants, Salon d'Automne) and in Parisian galleries, including Galerie Suillerot and Galerie Romanet.
Since 1948, he has held some one hundred solo exhibitions, and his work has travelled from New York to Tokyo, by way of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Zurich and Hamburg.
His paintings are held in public and private collections, including the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the São Paulo museum, as well as the collections of Greta Garbo, Kirk Douglas and Edward G. Robinson.
