Biography

Inspiration of Nature in South of France

Between Geometry and Sensuality

• 1965: Born in Marseille, France

• The inspirations to So du Sud (Solange Borrelli) come primarily from natural sources on the outskirts of her birthplace in Marseilles. So du Sud developed a passion for drawing from an early age. She creates characters made up of everything she gleans during her walks in the hills and by the sea. Pieces of wood, tree leaves and pebbles come to life in her hands.

• The line architecture harmonizes curves and angles in a play of facets that recreates volumes. Between geometry and sensuality, her sculpture appropriates the light and makes it vibrate for the greatest pleasure of our eyes.

• So du Sud grew up with the dream of entering Fine Arts. Her parents, however, encouraged her to move towards a scientific field while reconciling drawing and art history. She therefore joined the Normal School of Aix-en-Provence where she learned about the visual arts. Then, the artist completed her training with a diploma in physical education and sports. The dynamics of moving bodies becomes a real source of inspiration for the young woman.

• Passionate about drawing, So du Sud then sketches her first characters on paper. Nevertheless, her approach to modeling and sculpture is a real revelation. She spent ten years in Françoise Hamel's studio, which pushed her to perfect her personal research and to explore different techniques in order to approach new materials such as earth, wood, plaster, resin, stone… This was the moment that essential style of So du Sud was formed.
