On a Summer Day in a Bathroom by Lieven d’Haese is a poetic contemporary bronze sculpture depicting two seated figures sharing a bathtub that subtly transforms into a fragile boat-like space of balance, dialogue, and imagination.
Through this intimate composition, the artist evokes childhood memory, companionship, and the quiet experience of shared presence. The bathtub becomes both a domestic object and a symbolic vessel, suggesting travel, trust, and the fragile equilibrium of human relationships. This ambiguity between interior space and imagined journey is characteristic of Lieven d’Haese’s sculptural language.
With its refined proportions, the sculpture is particularly easy to integrate into contemporary interiors, collectors’ displays, and architectural settings. The elegant steel base reinforces the contrast between material strength and narrative lightness.
Rich in tenderness and poetic suggestion, the work perfectly reflects the artist’s humanistic approach to figurative sculpture.
On a Summer Day in a Bathroom will be presented at SM’ART Aix-en-Provence as part of the gallery’s selection of contemporary European figurative sculpture.
