“My work is built on movement, material and instinct. I paint to explore sensation rather than image, using layers of texture to capture energy, emotion and the unexpected. I create most of my pieces with my hands or with tools I design myself, allowing me to work intuitively on the surface. For me, abstraction is not a style but a way of entering a dialogue with matter — a space where colour, gesture and texture breathe their own life and invite the viewer to feel rather than interpret.”
Mathis Duhem is a visual artist and designer whose work focuses on the physicality of painting and the emotional resonance of abstraction. Passionate about art since childhood, he has developed a distinctive practice in which material and colour take precedence over defined forms. His large-scale compositions are built through layered gestures, textured surfaces and an experimental approach that varies from piece to piece.
Duhem often works directly with his hands or with handmade tools he creates specifically for each series, allowing him to carve, scrape or imprint the paint in unique ways. This process-driven approach places equal importance on the act of creating as on the final result, revealing the traces of movement, energy and intuition at the core of his work.
